The Last of Us Part II Receives New Trailer; New Characters Revealed

While Sony unveiled a number of trailers during the PlayStation Paris Games Week’s media showcase, they saved one of their more anticipated titles under their belt for last by releasing a new trailer for The Last of Us Part II.

It’s worth pointing out just how bleak the entire trailer is. While The Last of Us was far from a cheery game, the use of lighting and seemingly ritualistic killing strikes a very dark impression from this new trailer. Considering the somber tone of the announcement trailer, this maybe shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

While the trailer doesn’t give away too many concrete details and lacks an appearance from the previous protagonists of the series, it does show us several new characters. While the raincoat-wearing characters who die throughout the trailer are obviously not too important, their use of pretty cruel killing methods and mentioning of a set of ‘apostates’ could give a hint as to what kind of human enemies are going to be in the game.

Of the surviving characters, it’s probably worth mentioning that the boy armed with a bow strikes a very familiar image from the first game, being similar to Ellie as a youth armed with only a bow and arrow. The woman who makes the main focus of the trailer also might be familiar to some, though not because of the first game: Naughty Dog previously released a poster for The Last of Us Part II which featured a heavily muscled arm gripping a bloodied hammer, an image that is struck by the woman just as the trailer closes.

Unfortunately, the trailer doesn’t give any hint of a release date. We can only hope this year’s PSX, coming in December, might have more details.
