Pokémon Sun and Moon were released in the UK on November 23rd, selling more copies than any other Nintendo game on launch. The game beat the previous record holder, Wii-Fit, which has held the record since 2008.
The games are currently third and fourth in the game charts with Pokémon Sun being the most popular. The games are only beaten by FIFA 17 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which were no doubt helped by Black Friday deals. Though, if the sales of the two games are combined, they take the top spot.
According to Eurogamer, the games managed to double the sales of Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby, which were released back in 2014. While the games were remakes, they still added a lot of new features, some which are unfortunately not in Sun/Moon.
The games’ early success in the UK might have been helped by the huge popularity of Pokémon Go. With this being Pokémon’s 20th anniversary, the whole year has seemed to be dominated by the talk of Pokémon. However, the games themselves deserve a lot of credit, with the whole adventure feeling refreshing. Who knows if the success will inspire Game Freak to continue experimenting with the series formula?
