Hands-on with the Valkyria Chronicles 4 Demo

So we went hands-on with the Valkyria Chronicles 4 Demo. This being my first time playing a Valkyria Chronicles game, I did not know what to expect. But after playing through the demo of Valkyria Chronicles 4, I must say that this is definitely a game that I would play. That doesn’t mean that it’s a game that everyone would enjoy, especially if you haven’t played the other games that stretch across multiple consoles.

Playing through this demo, I can see that Valkyria Chronicles 4 plays like an XCOM game, which is my type of game. Valkyria Chronicles 4 has a gorgeous cel-shaded look that gives the game a lot of character, and the story is told from the perspective of Claude Wallace through his journal. In the demo, and presumably in the full game as well, you play as Claude Wallace and his squad as they are assisting in the Operation Northern Cross offensive that they are hoping will end the war with their enemies.

Each mission is selected though the diary of First Lieutenant Claude. As the leader of your squad, you command your soldiers from a top-down grid perspective. From there your characters will switch to real time perspectives where you directly control your squadmates, followed by Claude in a tank. At first, I didn’t really understand how the game was supposed to be played, but after restarting the tutorial and managing to complete it, I had a decent understanding on how the game plays.

Overall, while I found the demo of Valkyria Chronicles 4 to be confusing, mostly due to the fact I’ve never played any of the previous games, I still found the game to be enjoyable, and I’m looking forward to the full release of the game on September 25th.
