New God of War Trailer Details Kratos’ Changing Character

Sony has released a new trailer for the upcoming action title, Dad of War-…sorry, God of War. This trailer comes as part of a series of pre-release videos for the title, with previous trailers giving details into the game’s musical score and its progression system. In this particular trailer, however, it’s focused entirely on the player character (and once nominee for ‘angriest video game character of all time’), Kratos.

In the trailer, creative director Cory Barlog talks of the kind of changes that Kratos is already going through even before the game starts. Following the events of God of War III, Kratos has been wandering the earth in complete solitude, and in the process “he has hit rock bottom emotionally.” His travels have afforded him some time to reflect and to start opening up to the idea of change within himself, but he “doesn’t know how to do it.”

Enter Kratos’ son, Atreus. Barlog describes Atreus as “the hand that pulls the humanity out [of Kratos],” opening his father up to the change that might not have been possible before. The relationship between Kratos and his son is going to form something of the emotional core of the game and is likely going play a pretty large part in the story.

It’ll be interesting to see if the developers behind the game can capitalise on this change in tone from the earlier God of War games and develop Kratos in a pretty new direction compared to his portrayals earlier in the series.

God of War will be available exclusively on the PS4 on April 20th.
