TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2 Review

TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2 is a motorcycle racing game and is part of the TT Isle of Man series. It was released on 19th March 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The game has also now been released on 14th May 2020 to play on Nintendo Switch.

TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2 had been developed by Kylotonn and published by Nacon. Nacon were formerly known as Bigben Interactive and were originally founded in 1981. Nacon, or Bigben Interactive, also have 100% stake in Kylotonn. Kylotonn specialize in motorsports. They are the official developer of the WRC FIA World Rally Championship series and Isle of Man Tourist Trophy.

TT Isle of Man 2 Modes

When you first play TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2, you go through a short tutorial on how to play the game and the controls for your motorcycle. After completing this, you can try out a few different game modes.

The story mode for the game is a tournament of races set out in a calendar. You go through one race at a time as you go through each month of a year. Each race and each month gets you closer to winning the tournament and taking home a well-earned trophy.

There is also a multiplayer mode. You can choose to play the multiplayer mode online or offline. This is where you can test your motorcycle skills against others. There is also a mode where you can explore and test your skills in free-roam. There are small challenges you can undertake whilst enjoying a relaxing motorcycle ride.

Motorcycle Movement

As I have mentioned, when you first play TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2, you go through a short tutorial. The tutorial is quite simple and easy to get through; however, it does not quite prepare you for the real thing. When you begin to enter into races, you feel a bit unprepared because the tutorial isn’t very detailed. The tutorial presents you with tools to play but doesn’t show you how to use them properly.

In the tutorial, there are boxes telling you which buttons to use, but this text is half the size of the actual boxes in which they’re presented. Because the text is so small and because they aren’t presented very well, it makes it even harder to take in the information. When you learn the right buttons to use, you don’t really get much of an opportunity to put them into practice until you are thrown into a race.

Riding on the Edge

The great thing about TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2 is how you feel like you are constantly on edge. Because of the speed and adrenaline that the game offers, it makes you feel like you could crash your bike to its doom at any moment. As a result of this, the game is quite exciting to play.

Another great thing about the game is the choice of bikes. This part of the game is very true to reality. There are so many different bikes and customization options through choosing bike parts and colours. I found it quite difficult to decide which bike to choose because each one had its own strong points. After you choose your first bike, you can obtain more through a garage.

Gameplay Complications

As I have mentioned, there are a few issues with the tutorial not being the best for teaching you how to play the game. I think the reason that this is the case is because of how over-complicated it is to control the bikes. I understand that they have tried to allow for gears that you have to change to increase and decrease speed. The issue is that when you are changing gears, it doesn’t feel like a fluid motion. It feels jittery and clunky. The whole game and the races actually feel like this.

Another issue with TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2 has to do with the graphics. The opening cutscene and some in-game cutscenes are great, but that is not the case during actual gameplay. While actively playing the game, the graphics are shockingly poor. I assumed that in order to compete with other racing titles, like Forza and DiRT Rally, the graphics would have been more of a focus for the developers.

TT Isle of Man 2 Overall

TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2 definitely has a few issues. The game is quite difficult to play because of the complicated control system that isn’t presented well during the tutorial. You are given all of the right tools during the tutorial but not really shown how to use them properly. The gameplay is over-complicated and feels jittery and clunky.

With all of that being said, the game does have some great features. The customization options for the bikes offer a variety of choice. TT Isle of Man: Ride on the Edge 2 is exciting and fun to play because the game offers players a bit of a rush through the high speeds it allows you to reach. You feel like you could crash to your untimely death at any second. I also thoroughly enjoyed the free-roam because it allowed me to get used to the controls a bit more, take my time and do some fun mini-challenges.
