Mafia: Trilogy Announcement Confirms Rumours of Remasters

Update May 13th at 17:14 :

More details have been revealed by Microsoft regarding the Mafia: Trilogy announcement.

It appears that the first Mafia game will be named Mafia: Definitive Edition and will be releasing on August 27th with Hangar 13 as its developer. According to the Microsoft Store, it’s described as being “re-made from the ground up.”

However, it appears that Mafia II: Definitive Edition will be releasing as early as next week, although it doesn’t appear to have undergone the same upgrade as the first Mafia game has. Instead of being re-made from the ground up, the game’s listing on the Microsoft Store describes it as being a remaster.

Mafia: Trilogy has been officially announced by 2K Games and Hangar 13, confirming rumours that remastered versions of previous Mafia games were in the works.

Speculation has been rife over the past couple of days that Hangar 13 were working on the release of an upcoming Mafia game following the franchise’s official Twitter account suddenly bursting into life, in addition to the news that a Korean rating board had registered two games titled “Mafia II: Definitive Edition” and “Mafia III: Definitive Edition”.

While Mafia: Trilogy will include remastered versions of Mafia II and Mafia III, it also appears that the upcoming game will remaster the very first Mafia game as well, which was released back in 2002.

In the announcement, the game’s official Twitter account invited players to “live the life of a gangster across three distinct eras of organized crime in America.” So while this isn’t the new entry in the Mafia franchise that some fans had hoped for, it is nonetheless combining remastered versions of all three games in one.

This is also confirmed in the game’s short trailer, which features all three settings from the Mafia games: Lost Heaven, Empire Bay and New Bordeaux.

What we do know for sure though is that Mafia: Trilogy will be releasing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Stay tuned for more news on May 19th!
