Developer Daedalic Entertainment has announced for the first time that they are working on The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, a brand new game in the franchise which is set to launch sometime in 2021.
While details on the game itself are in rather short supply right now, Daedalic did reveal that, as the name suggests, the game will be following the story of Gollum from a ‘perspective never seen before’ while remaining true to the books themselves. The game will act as a prequel to the The Lord of the Rings and will show us what Gollum was up to before he was first featured in the books.
Speaking about the game, Daedalic CEO Carsten Fichtelmann said, “We tell Gollum’s story from a perspective never seen before, in any storytelling medium, all the while staying true to the legendary books of J.R.R. Tolkien.”
“At a time when the games industry is undergoing structural changes and seeing new business models evolve, we are excited to realise a huge new production based on a story that has stayed fresh and relevant for more than 60 years.”
The game is touted to be released on “all relevant console platforms” at the time of release, so given that by 2021 we should be well into the next-generation of gaming, it looks likely that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be heading to the new Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as perhaps Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A Nintendo Switch release could also be on the cards.
