Nintendo Switch Sold More Consoles Than Xbox One and PS4 in January 2019

Latest sales data has revealed that the Nintendo Switch sold more consoles than the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in January 2019.

According to The NPD Group, the Nintendo Switch was the most popular console in the US last month, despite not having two of the year’s biggest games, Kingdom Hearts III and Resident Evil 2, release on the platform. Not only that, but the Switch is also the only console to show year-on-year sales growth.

“Nintendo Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of January 2019. Both in dollar and unit sales,” said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella. “Switch was the only console platform to show year-on-year sales growth.”

Despite the Nintendo Switch getting off to a good start in 2019, overall hardware sales are still declining, with hardware spending down 28% from a year ago to $199 million. However, this is to be expected, especially when you take into account how long the Xbox One and PS4 have been available on the market.

Last month Nintendo revealed that since releasing in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has sold 32 million units worldwide, surpassing the 13.5 million units sold by the Wii U. The Switch has the Xbox One in its sights, with current sales figures for Microsoft’s console estimated to be at 39.1 million.
