There will be no Assassin’s Creed game in 2019, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has confirmed at Gamescom.
Instead, Ubisoft will be focusing on supporting Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, which releases later this year. The company plans on providing additional content for Odyssey, which is aimed at keeping players engaged and increasing the longevity of the game.
Ubisoft last gave the Assassin’s Creed franchise a break in 2016 following the release of Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate in 2015. The reason why we’ve had two annual releases of Assassin’s Creed in a row is that both Origins and Odyssey were being developed separately but at the same time, with the knowledge that there would be no game in 2019.
“On Assassin’s, we had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin’s next year,” Guillemot told GameSpot. “It’s just because the team were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you’re not going to have a fully fledged one.”
If you’re hoping for a spin-off game in 2019 though thanks to Guillemot’s use of the term “fully fledged” game, you’re out of luck. 2019 will be all about supporting Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey.
“What you’ll have is lots of content coming on [Assassin’s Creed Odyssey]. The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you’re going to get in for a couple of years, actually.”
Guillemot also told GameSpot that he felt that the decision to stop the annual release of Assassin’s Creed was worth it and that it’s allowed the developers enough time to really bring what they wanted to the series.
“[The time] gave the team the possibility to really bring what they wanted to. The community has been responding very well to it and when I see what we are bringing with Odyssey I know that the community that got back in with Origins will be amazed.”
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on October 5th.
