The launch of PlayStation VR is already being considered as a great success for Sony. PlayStation VR has been well received by the gaming industry, and that has been reflected in sales of the VR headset which Sony have said are “on-track” to what they expected.
Speaking at Sony’s earnings briefing, Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida stated that “sales of PSVR, which was launched in October, are on track.”
However, the PlayStation VR launched too late to be included within Sony’s Q2 financial results, July to September, which explains why no exact figure for the number of headsets sold was provided. As a result, the launch of PSVR has not been factored in to Sony’s sales forecast as of yet.
Despite no figures being provided, it looks likely that hundreds of thousands of PlayStation VR headsets have been sold since they launched last month. Back in October PlayStation executive Jim Ryan did say that Sony expected to sell hundreds of thousands of headsets, so the fact that sales are “on-track” suggest that the actual figure won’t be too far away from Ryan’s estimate.
Market research firm SuperData also revealed back in March that they expected 2.6 million headsets to be sold by the end of year. We’ll have to wait until Sony releases some sales figure for the PlayStation VR before we know if they get anywhere close to that prediction.
