No doubt the success of the NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition has not gone ignored by former Nintendo competitors. SEGA is following in Nintendo’s footsteps and entering the retro mini console business.
During SEGA’s fan festival SEGA FES 2018, SEGA announced that a Mega Drive Mini would be released this year in celebration of the consoles 30th anniversary. No further details were announced, although we got our first look at the mini console. SEGA hopes to share more information “soon”, including release date, price, and list of included games.
For those not familiar, the SEGA Mega Drive (or SEGA Genesis as it is known in the US) was released in Japan in 1988. Despite having a strong lineup of SEGA arcade titles, the Mega Drive didn’t ever light-up the sales charts in Japan. In the US and Europe the console took off, managing to sell more than 30 million consoles to date.
