Disgaea 7 Complete Review

I got the chance to try Disgaea 5 Complete at the Nintendo Switch demo event in January of 2017. Afterwards, when I got my Switch 1, one of the FIRST games I bought was Disgaea 5 Complete. I was hooked by the gameplay of making the protagonists and your ally classes of choice be as ridiculously overpowered as possible in a quest to take down Void Dark and his army of “The Lost.” The music was great, the settings were great, and the spritework? Ohh, so good!

The game had many characters (main, side or otherwise) serve as foils to each other, making for many great comedic moments throughout the story. So, when the serious moments came hitting at various points, including the Persona 4-esque way of unlocking their overload skills, I felt genuinely connected. I even dabbled into the game’s GIGANTIC and, frankly, nearly endless post-game content.

That is the hallmark of an incredible strategy JRPG or RPG in general. Xenoblade Chronicles was the other exception, to an extent, to my “no post-game” rule. I clocked nearly 100 hours in that game before losing access to my initial account, at which point I had to restart my digital-game library all over again on a separate NA Nintendo-linked gmail account. Ugh…

Flashforward to Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny. It was a rough transition to 3D for the series. Auto-play mechanics, arbitrary level caps, fewer classes than in 5 Complete (which even had DLC from prior Disgaea games and other NIS games from Chapter 1 available), and lastly, it did NOT feel good enough to play even after a 6-year cook period “in the oven”, so to speak.

So, when Disgaea 7 Complete was announced and revealed to be keeping the 3D graphics style, I was concerned. However, the story was a major improvement (no major spoilers!) over Disgaea 6, though considering the low bar Disgaea 6 brought the series to, that’s not saying too much. But, what is a good story without good gameplay to back it up, provided it has any good at all? Let’s find out!

Size up your enemy, Disgaea 7 style!

The game introduces Jumbification as a main mechanic. Jumbification is a gameplay feature in Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless that allows units to become gigantic temporarily.

Battles will feature a Rage Meter that fills when any of the following happens:

An ally deals damage to an enemy: +1%
An enemy deals attack damage to allies: +5%
An enemy uses a skill on allies: +5%
An ally unit dies: +20%

The meter can be filled up to 200%, and any unit can spend 100% to use the “Jumbify” command. Activating the command fully restores the unit’s HP and SP and grants the following effects for 3 turns:

  • Positioning: The unit will become giant and stand outside the stage by one of its edges (the player can freely choose any unoccupied edge), from where they can still be targeted by units standing on the stage. Because of this, a stage can have up to 4 Jumbified units at once, although the player can only have 1 or 2 (based on squad level) giant units at a time.
  • Commands: A giant unit can’t move, lift, use skills or use items. Their normal attack targets a 5×5 area, has infinite range and hits at 133% to 230% Base Power (based on unit’s level). They also gain the “Gigaster Attack” command, which works as a skill that hits another giant unit at 203% to 309% Base Power (based on the unit’s current level).
  • Jumbilities: Every class has a Jumbility, which grants a passive effect just like Evilities. A Jumbility is only active while the owner is giant, and their effect is granted to every unit on the map.
Nice to see Killia again, even in a non-canon scenario…

As for the story/plot, it’s actually more interesting this time around, thankfully, than it was in Disgaea 6. While it’s not as good as Disgaea 5 Complete, it does come pretty darn close at times. It involves Infernal Weapons, hilarious hijinks, and major family drama involving Fuji.

The major new features to complement this story include the following:

  • Hell Mode: Characters with access to an Infernal Weapon have a gauge that fills on specific conditions, and once it’s full, they can release the full power of the weapon.
  • Jumbification: A feature that allows any character to become gigantic, gaining massive attacks and spreading a passive effect through the whole map.
  • Item Reincarnation: Items whose Item World has been fully explored can be returned to level 1 while inheriting stats and can even reincarnate as a different item.
  • Properties: Items are spawned with traits that grant various modifiers. Use Item Reincarnation to transform an item and accumulate many powerful Properties.
  • Missions: Each stage comes with a series of challenges that grant a prize if they’re cleared.
  • Netherworld Sightseeing: Walk around the terrain of cleared stages and interact with its inhabitants.

In terms of 3D, I’m pleased to say that the 3D has finally won me over after its implementation in Disgaea 6. For fps, it runs at a buttery smooth 60fps with no to few frame drops outside of combat.

Now, in closing, I would’ve gotten this review out much sooner if not for one major reason: I had too much dang fun playing the game and getting lost in everything. Plus, the complete version once again includes Killia as an unlockable character, and since I LOVE Killia (and Disgaea 5 in general), I’m very happy to see that Disgaea 7 brought back more of what worked in 5 and less of what didn’t work in 6 (though what did get brought back from 6 has improved dramatically).
