Sony “Aware” of Demand From Gamers for Crash Bandicoot Reboot

There’s been a lot of demand from gamers in recent months for one of gaming’s most iconic franchises, Crash Bandicoot, to make a comeback, and it seems that Sony are listening, but unfortunately it may not be totally in their hands.

Speaking in the latest issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine, SCEE President Jim Ryan was asked about the chances of seeing a new Crash Bandicoot game in the future. He stated that Sony were aware of the demand and affection held for Crash Bandicoot, but had nothing to report on the matter.

“Um… we’re certainly aware of the considerable affection—even reverence—in which the mighty Crash is held. But nothing to update at this stage in that area,” Ryan said.

An easter egg in Uncharted 4 was found which gave Crash Bandicoot fans a glimmer of hope that something may be lined up. However, Sony came out and confirmed that Activision still owned the rights to the series and that it wasn’t up to them what happens with the series. Anyone who played the old Crash Bandicoot games may remember that Uncharted 4‘s developer, Naughty Dog, were the original developers of the series from 1996 until 1999.

The license for Crash Bandicoot has been passed around between developers and publishers a number of times in the last decade with the likes of Konami, Vivendi Universal Games, and Sierra Entertainment all acquiring the license at one point or another. The current holders are Activision, who have owned the rights since 2008.
Mind Over Mutant was the last Crash Bandicoot game to release on consoles. Sadly, that was back in 2008.
