Naughty Dog Clarifies the Lack of Multiplayer in The Last of Us Part II

Developer Naughty Dog has been making headlines recently with their highly anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive The Last of Us Part II; however, many have been concerned over the absence of any mention of the return of multiplayer.

While The Last of Us certainly wasn’t remembered entirely for its multiplayer mode, the survival-based Factions mode did have a dedicated community on PlayStation 3 and continues to thrive through the game’s PlayStation 4 remaster. The mode was added into the game in the final stages of development and announced to be part of the title only a week before its initial release as the IP was unproven, but it managed to give the game longevity after its June 2013 release.

Rumours that Naughty Dog would be forgoing an online multiplayer mode came into circulation following the Los Angeles media event for The Last of Us Part II this week in which many journalists from around the industry claimed that a representative of Naughty Dog had informed them that The Last of Us Part II would not feature any sort of online multiplayer component, despite statements made by the game’s co-directors at E3 2018 apparently confirming that it would be present. This caused many to take to social media voicing their love of the initial Factions mode from the original title, prompting Naughty Dog to release this official statement;

While the statement is still very vague as to what the future holds for The Last of Us’ Factions mode, it seems like Naughty Dog is actively developing it, albeit conceptually, either for its own standalone title or possibly for some future title. As for now, we will have to wait and see, but I imagine most will have very little to complain about by the time The Last of Us Part II launches.

The Last of Us Part II launches on February 21st, 2020 exclusively for PlayStation 4. You can check out the latest trailer for the game here.
