Rumour: Are Nintendo Releasing a 4K Switch Console in 2019?

Microsoft and Sony have both released upgraded versions of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If current rumours are to be believed, Nintendo could be about to join the club next year and release an upgraded Nintendo Switch console capable of 4K.

According to tweets made by “industry insider” Marcus Sellars, Nintendo is working on an upgraded Nintendo Switch which will release in early 2019 and will be able to deliver 4K visuals through dynamic scaling. Sellar also added that this upgraded Switch would come with 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

He also claimed that the new Switch would have some exclusive titles that could only be played on the upgraded Switch and not the standard one, hinting that a remake of Resident Evil 2 could be possible.

As noted by GameRant, Sellars has since deleted the tweets, but that hasn’t stopped the rumours from spreading across the internet.

While Sellers has provided accurate information previously, he’s also been wrong on several occasions before including his claim that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 would be releasing on the Switch, which we now know was false. Therefore, this latest rumour should be taken with a pinch of salt.

It’s hard to say whether or not an upgraded Nintendo Switch is likely to release anytime soon or not. While it certainly does seem to be an option available to Nintendo, especially with Microsoft and Sony already releasing their own upgraded consoles, the Nintendo Switch only released in March 2017. It would seem unlikely that Nintendo would be in such a rush to release an upgraded console after just two years.

GameRant also makes the point that if Nintendo were to release a new Switch console, they would likely do it during the holiday season to maximise profits rather then launching it at the start of the year. Both the Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro were launched in November.

It will be interesting to see what Nintendo’s next move will be, especially as we move closer to the next-generation of consoles. An upgraded Nintendo Switch releasing in a few months though, while plausible, doesn’t appear to be that likely.
