Report: PlayStation Now Download Option Launching Later This Year

After the rumour we reported on last week of a download option appearing on PlayStation Now, it seems more fuel is being added to the fire with Kotaku stating the new update will launch later this year.

Kotaku’s report cites an industry source with confirming the rumour that started up when an image of a download option made the rounds on reddit. Though it appears only half of what that image purported is true. While a download option is coming its exclusive to PS4 games only … at least initially.

The downloaded games will work similarly to free games on PlayStation Plus in which they only work so long as your subscription is active. It seems the service is shifting to compete with Xbox’s Game Pass that Microsoft has been increasing focus on as of late.

Though the lack of backwards compatibility will undoubtedly disappoint many who wanted to finally pack away their old systems. If Sony gives the service some good support with a list of first and third party games, it could be a great service and seems to further suggest the notion that subscription based services will be a big focus in gaming going forward.

Though Sony have yet to officially comment, its likely we will hear more at the upcoming Gamescom event. It’ll be interesting to see how a download option will affect the notoriously disliked service later in the year.
