Nier: Automata Director Yoko Taro Wants Switch Version

With the announcement of Nier: Automata coming to Xbox One later this month, that only leaves Nintendo’s console yet to be graced by existentialism and shapely androids. But according to a livestream with the game’s director and producer, Yoko Taro posed the question of Nier: Automata on Switch.

During Square Enix’s E3 livestream, Director Yoko Taro, in typical fashion, asked Producer Yoskue Saito “Well, um, when are we getting the Switch version, Saito-san?”, to which Saito replied that the decision wasn’t his to make but that if it was, he would also like to make it happen. Though the exchange was handled in a joking fashion, the implication seemed to be that if enough interest was roused, it’s something the team would like to do.

Saito urged fans to be vocal about it on Producer Takahisa Taura’s Twitter: “Well, Taura-kun’s Twitter account is shown on the screen here, and if everyone asks him for it, then there may be a possibility that it would become a reality. But even if it does, it might be about two years from now again. See we keep our jobs alive by releasing a little by little.”

It seems a Switch port will likely come down to vocal interest from fans, though Square’s announcement earlier in the month that they are renewing focus on the Switch would make Automata a prime port for Nintendo’s console. Perhaps a strong performance of the Become as Gods edition releasing on Xbox One will also be a contributing factor.

Nier: Automata was released on PS4 in March 2017 and remains a masterclass in video game storytelling, the Xbox One edition of the game will be coming worldwide on June 26th, 2018.
