Pillars of Eternity: Lords of the Eastern Reach smashes Kickstarter goal

An officially licensed card game based on Pillars of Eternity has already smashed its initial goal of $30,000, after being launched on Kickstarter on May 28th. Pillars of Eternity: Lords of the Eastern Reach, designed by Chris Taylor and Scott Everets, has already reached a number of stretch goals and the momentum is still going.

Here’s how the designers describe the game, “Lords of the Eastern Reach is a strategic card game of adventure and empire building based on the Pillars of Eternity video game from Obsidian Entertainment. You must protect and build a city. Hire heroes and troops for defense or to delve into dangerous dungeons for loot and glory. Build towers, blacksmiths and other buildings to gain the advantage and go for the win.”

As the Kickstarter page shows, the card game very much mimics the aesthetics of the original game and uses much of the same characters and areas. The hero cards also have unique attributes, based on their portrayals in the video game.

The Pillars of Eternity development team has also been actively involved with the game. Lords of the Eastern Reach is designed for 2-4 players and takes around 30 minutes, per player, to complete. It currently costs $39 to back the game and receive the finished product when it is released, with some other more extravagant options. It is expected to ship February next year.

Pillars of Eternity was released earlier this year in March. Seen as a spiritual successor to the classic RPG series Baldur’s Gate and also Icewind Dale, the game was extraordinarily well-received with many high scores and a strong community quickly forming. The game was also Kickstarted, with a massive total of almost $4,000,000.
