Blizzard’s Unannounced First-Person Shooter Progresses

In 2016, Blizzard posted multiple job listings for a Lead Software Designer for a ‘‘robust first-person engine for an unannounced project.’’ It was hinted that the engine could appear on ‘‘multiple platforms’’.

Fast forward to now, and Blizzard are looking for a Senior/Principal Game Designer for the what appears to be the same project. They’ve posted the listing on their Careers site.

This project sparked much debate back in 2016. Fans speculated whether it could have something to do with Blizzard’s first foray into the FPS genre, Overwatch, possibly a single-player campaign to complement the multiplayer that led to the title winning the Game of the Year Award for 2016.

However, that now seems unlikely as one of the requirements for the Game Designer role clearly states they are looking for someone with an ‘‘Absolute passion for playing and creating PvP game experiences.’’ This, of course, leads us to believe that they’re working on another Player vs Player-focused shooter.

This time around, some fans are speculating if it could be an Overwatch sequel. However, signs suggest that this is highly unlikely to be the case given that they already possess a well-established design team for the Overwatch franchise.

Here are some further details taken from the description of the job listing:

“Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented and experienced Senior or Principal Designer with experience in developing weapons, abilities, and gameplay systems in action or first-person shooter games.

As a Senior or Principal Designer, you’ll work with numerous departments to shape the core gameplay experience for this unannounced project by defining the abilities, powers, and weapons our players will use.”
