Pre-orders of PlayStation VR have exceeded Sony’s expectations

Pre-orders of Sony’s PlayStation VR have surpassed the companies expectations since the device became available to pre-order last week, PlayStation Europe Boss Jim Ryan has stated.

Since the PlayStation 4’s virtual reality headset became available to pre-order, it has sold out at various outlets around the world, including launch day stock of the PlayStation VR selling out on Amazon within 45 minutes of being available. PlayStation VR will be available in October and will cost £349.99 however a PlayStation Camera will also be needed in order to use it.

Speaking to MCV, Jim Ryan stated that he is unsure whether or not there will be enough stock available though on launch day meaning that not everyone will be able to experience VR on the PlayStation right away.

“It’s hard to tell”, said Ryan when asked if there would be enough stock. “The news overnight on pre-orders is extremely encouraging, but I’d be very wary about extrapolating how we’ll do through to launch based on less than 24 hours.”

“I would say that the early pre-orders has surpassed our initial expectations. So that suggests demand, and therefore day one, might be quite significant.”

PlayStation VR is currently the cheapest piece of VR available to buy as the Oculus Rift costs £500 while the HTC Vive will set you back £689. In addition to that though, you will need a high end PC to be able to use them which makes the cost even greater. Therefore the price of PlayStation VR is seen as being very reasonable and will certainly open up virtual reality to more gamers, that’s also something Ryan is extremely comfortable with.

“I am extremely comfortable with the RRP,” PlayStation’s European chief Jim Ryan said. “These are obviously decisions that we think about hugely, we always do. We always try to represent good value in our pricing, and we think we have done that with PlayStation VR.”
