GTA Online Still Generates More Revenue Than Red Dead Online

Despite being Rockstar’s latest title, Red Dead Online failed to generate more revenue than Grand Theft Auto Online in January 2019.

According to SuperData, the monthly revenue generated by Red Dead Online fell by 14% in January. The fall in revenue is attributed to a decline in the monthly active users. Rockstar’s highest grossing game remains to be Grand Theft Auto Online, which generated five times more revenue than Read Dead Online over the last month.

As noted by SuperData, it may be unfair to compare Red Dead Online to GTA Online at this stage due to the mode still being in beta. Once Rockstar fully releases Red Dead Online, we may get a better idea of how successful it will be.

When GTA Online first launched into beta in 2013, it encountered similar issues to Red Dead Online, with the active userbase being nowhere near as big as it is today. It remains to be seen if Red Dead Online will ever get close to being as popular as GTA Online, and given how disappointing many gamers have found the mode to be right now, it’s not looking good.

Still, this is Rockstar, and Red Dead Redemption II managed to sell over 15 million copies in just eight days followings its release. The player base is there if Rockstar can get the formula for Red Dead Online right. Releasing the game on PC would also greatly increase their player base and revenue, especially when it comes to Red Dead Online.
