Was HoloLens more popular than Oculus Rift, PSVR and HTC Vive in 2015?

If you had to choose what piece of tech out of the Ocolus Rift, PlayStation VR, HTC Vive and Microsoft’s HoloLens was the most popular, you’d probably have gone with the Oculus Rift. However, according to web analytics firm SimilarWeb, you’d be wrong.

SimilarWeb have reported that when it comes to search traffic, Microsoft’s augmented reality headset HoloLens has proven to be the most popular, with over 29.6 million visits being directed to Microsoft’s website compared to just 15.9 million search visits to the Oculus Rift website.

“In terms of search, from January to December 2015 HoloLens related search terms accounted for 0.67% of Microsoft’s worldwide search traffic, meaning 29.6 million visits to Microsoft.com came from people looking for HoloLens,” says Moshe Alexenberg, director of digital insights at SimilarWeb.

However, over half of the total searchs for the HoloLens were conducted in January following Microsoft’s announcement about the headset. HoloLens was also revealed at E3 2015, however interest has since declined with only 753,000 visits coming to the site in November 2015.

While there are no figures about Oculus Rift’s search popularity so far in 2016, it’s expected to far outweight the search traffic for HoloLens, especially given the Rift’s launch later this year, in addition to the HoloLens being a few years away from release.

It’s still interesting to see though that HoloLens proved to be the most popular gadget when it came to searched in 2015 given that it has received less exposure when compared to virtual reality.
