PlayStation 5 Is Official and Launches Holiday 2020

Sony confirms that their next generation console, the PlayStation 5, launches in time for Christmas 2020. This will put the new console in direct competition with Microsoft’s Project Scarlett, which is launching near that time. This repeats the competition between the PS4 and Xbox One back in 2013.

In a PlayStation Blog, President and CEO of SIE Jim Ryan speaks briefly about new haptic technology and adaptive triggers coming to controllers.

Haptic feedback technology replaces ‘rumble’ technology, giving a broader range of feedback. Sony intends to give variation to feedback in controllers to better represent in-game environments. Feedback would change based on the type of terrain, as well as the type of collision.

Adaptive triggers allow developers to change the resistance of triggers in order to better simulate a variety of actions. Game developers have recently started to receive early versions of the new controller. News of games using the newer technology will likely come closer to the date PlayStation 5 launches.
