Mortal Kombat X Sales Close In on 11 Million Copies

Mortal Kombat X has sold nearly 11 million copies since launching back in 2015, series creator and head of NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon has revealed.

The impressive sales figures for Mortal Kombat X means that the game has become the most successful entry in the franchise’s history

In an interview with Game Informer, Ed Boon was asked what game in the Mortal Kombat series had sold the most copies, to which he revealed that it was Mortal Kombat X. While it wasn’t surprising to see that the latest game has proven to be the most popular, it was interesting for him to reveal that 11 million copies had been sold, more than double the sales of its prequel. 2011’s reboot of Mortal Kombat only managed to sell 5 million copies before Mortal Kombat X released four years later.

Mortal Kombat X first released in April 2015 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, with iOS and Android also getting a version of the game. A game of the year-style edition was released a year later in 2016 called Mortal Kombat XL, which included all the characters previously released as DLC.

With the release of Mortal Kombat 11 just around the corner, NetherRealm Studios will be hoping that the upcoming sequel will perform just as well, if not better, than Mortal Kombat X when it comes to sales.

As of 2015, it was confirmed that more than 35 million copies of Mortal Kombat had been sold between all the entries in the franchise. With another 11 million copies now confirmed to have been sold by Mortal Kombat X, plus with the upcoming launch of Mortal Kombat 11, it looks very likely that the series will surpass 50 million copies sold very soon.
