Xbox One Japan’s Worst Selling Console in 2018

Microsoft has always struggled to gain success in Japan with its consoles, so it’s no surprise that the Xbox One hasn’t fared too well in the country when it comes to sales. Despite that, the latest hardware sales report from Japan for 2018 will still make for particularly tough reading for Microsoft.

In 2018, just over 15,000 Xbox One consoles (including Xbox One S and Xbox One X) were sold in Japan. That brings the overall number of consoles sold by Microsoft in the country just shy of 103,000 since the Xbox One released in Japan on September 4th, 2014. Even the country’s second worst-selling console, the PlayStation Vita, managed to sell more consoles in 2018 than Microsoft has managed since they released the Xbox One in Japan.

As would be expected, sales of Sony’s PlayStation 4 consoles saw it remain one of the top-selling consoles in the country with 1.695 million units sold in 2018. Overall, PlayStation 4 console sales stand at 7.5 million.

The Nintendo Switch was Japan’s best selling console with just under 3.5 million consoles being sold to consumers in the last year, bringing overall Switch sales to 6.89 million.

Here are how Japan’s top-selling consoles compare:

Japan’s Top-Selling Hardware of 2018 (Estimated Figures)

  1. Switch – 3,482,388
  2. PlayStation 4  – 1,695,227
  3. 3DS (including 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, 2DS, and New 2DS XL) – 566,420
  4. PS Vita – 181,728
  5. Xbox One – 15,339
