Nintendo Switch Was the Best-Selling Console of 2018

Earlier in the week, we reported early NPD results that showed Nintendo Switch having a tremendous 2018. Now full official numbers are out from The NPD Group, and Nintendo Switch was officially the best-selling hardware platform of 2018.

Here’s the full rundown of information that was provided:

  • In the US, Switch sold 5.6 million units of hardware in 2018
  • System is up up 16% year-over-year
  • Total installed base of Switch at 10.5 million in the US
  • In the US, Switch ends 2018 as the year’s best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars
  • Annual unit and dollar sales of Switch are the highest annual total for any hardware platform since the PlayStation 4 in 2015
  • Switch has been on the market for 22 months in the US
  • When launch aligned, the total install base of the Switch is 22% higher than the PS4 and 34% higher than the Xbox One, respectively
  • In December 2018, Switch was the best selling hardware platform, selling more than the PS4 & XB1 combined
  • Switch sold 125% more units than the PS4 and 92% more than the Xbox One
  • In December 2018, Switch had the best selling single month of any console hardware this generation
  • Switch generated the highest December month hardware dollar sales since the Wii in December 2009 and achieved the highest December unit sales for a single platform since December 2010
  • In December 2018, Nintendo took a 55% share of all console hardware units sold in the US
  • A total of 2.8 million units were sold across Switch, 3DS, NES Classic and SNES Classic
  • This is up 9% year-over-year
  • Switch was up 18% year-over-year in December
  • Nintendo was the top publisher of 2018 in the US
  • The last time Nintendo was #1 was in 2009
  • When ranked by individual SKU, 4 Nintendo games appeared in NPD’s top 10, with 19 in the top 50
