Future Bethesda Games May Still Release on Steam, Including Fallout 76

We all know by now that Fallout 76 will not be launching Steam and instead will only be available exclusively through Bethesda.net. However, the omission of Fallout 76 from Steam doesn’t mean that future Bethesda games will not be released on the platform.

There had been a fear that future Bethesda games would not be released on Steam. As expected, a lot of gamers took this as bad news as Steam is the most popular PC video game marketplace in the world. And if there’s one thing gamers care about, it’s having all their games in one place.

Speaking to IGN, Bethesda’s Pete Hines said, “We did not announce ‘all future Bethesda games will not be on Steam’. That is not what we said. We said ‘this game will be available exclusively on Bethesda.net,'”.

However, Hines did go on to say that Bethesda is yet to make a decision on whether or not Doom Eternal would be released on Steam or if it would be another Bethesda.net exclusive.

Bethesda has revealed that the reason for making Fallout 76 available only through Bethesda.net is due to the nature of the game. As it’s an online, ongoing game, the company felt that it would be best to keep it in-house as it will make it easier for Bethesda to communicate with players.

“We have found very good successes in having those direct relationships with customers, and not been able to see those same benefits when we work through somebody else. And so, specific for Fallout 76, we are going to try this because we think it will give us the best chance to do right by our customers.”

Hines concluded by adding that it is “possible” that Fallout 76 will come to Steam eventually, as was the case with The Elder Scrolls Online which launched on Bethesda.net first before releasing on Steam.

“Is it possible? I guess, but I honestly couldn’t give you any guarantee one way or the other on whether it will or won’t.”

Fallout 76 will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 14th.
