With the recent news of Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man game going gold, the company has been conducting interviews in anticipation for the game’s release. In one such interview, among other questions, the future of its PS3 shooter series, Resistance, was brought up.
When asked about the possibility of a Resistance 4, Insomniac community director James Stevenson said, “It feels like it’s a longshot to me,” though adding that, “But I have learned over the years to never say never.”
The Resistance series has laid dormant since 2012, with the release of the fairly forgettable PS Vita spin-off Resistance: Burning Skies. Prior to that, the series’ last main entry, Resistance 3, which released in September 2011, failed to match the sales of prior entries in the series, coming out in a crowded year of PlayStation exclusives, despite being arguably the series’ best entry.
Though James commented on the fact that Sony still holds the rights to the IP and can choose to enlist a new studio to develop a new entry in the future, it seems unlikely a true follow-up from Insomniac is out of the question.
The Resistance series was always a favorite among Sony’s crop during the seventh generation, so it’s a shame to see it likely won’t be brought over to the current generation like Killzone and Infamous have prior. The series’ unique weaponry and alternate history setting still seems brimming with potential for future entries. Here’s hoping the series finally sees the light of day again in the future.
