Square-Enix’s return to the old school JRPG has proven a huge success, with Octopath Traveler officially shipping 1 million copies worldwide. The Switch exclusive published by Nintendo and developed by the same team behind Bravely Default has been long awaited by genre fans as a return to the old school roots of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.
The number includes both physical shipped copies and eShop downloads and was announced by Nintendo of Europe who added that Square Enix wanted to thank fans for making this happen. Octopath Traveler’s surprise success is already known in Japan where it sold out on its first day of release, but this news is a big indicator of the game making similar waves here in the West.
The success of Octopath Traveler continues an uplifting trend of both niche and Japanese game series seeing big success here in the West, with Nier: Automata shipping 3 million copies and Persona 5 selling over 2 million copies, respectively. Hopefully, the success of Octopath Traveler will cause publishers to reconsider the cold shoulder given to old school JRPGs in recent years, as it’s been made clear that an audience is still alive and well for the genre.
