Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 May Not Include a Single-Player Campaign

Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 may not ship with a single-player campaign but instead might come with the heavily popular Battle Royale mode.

According to reports from Kotaku and Polygon, there are rumours coming in that this year’s Black Ops 4 won’t ship with a single-player campaign, which will be a first for the Call of Duty series, though the game will still include the ever popular multiplayer and zombie modes. Publisher Activision aren’t sharing any information yet, with their response to the rumours simply being, “We don’t comment on rumor and speculation” in a email to Kotaku.

It’s not surprising that publishers like Activision are looking to capitalise on the new Battle Royale mode that has been all the craze over the last year with games such as PlayerUknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite doing so well. Well, there are other Battle Royale games out there, but this could be the first big publisher to take advantage of the new multiplayer game mode.

Rumours coming in are that a single-player campaign was in the works, but time was running out and it wasn’t at the stage it needed to be. It remains to be seen whether we’ll get a story campaign as DLC or if they scrap it all together.

Although Call of Duty single-player campaign modes have generally been well received, the multiplayer has always been the main focus of the series. It seems like a risk for Activision to release a Call of Duty game without a single-player campaign, but will players really miss it? That remains to be seen. But if the series does include a Battle Royale mode, would that be enough to satisfy players?

Activision will officially reveal more details about the new Black Ops during an event on May 17th. It’s due to release on October 12th on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
