The Nintendo Switch is Nintendo’s hottest game console ever, setting milestones for fastest selling console in US and Japanese history. However, just because the Switch is a massive success and is selling fast, it doesn’t mean Nintendo isn’t already thinking about the future.
At the BAFTA Awards last night, Nintendo’s general manager of hardware development, Shinya Takahashi, teased that Nintendo is already working on the next Nintendo device. Speaking to the BBC, Mr. Takahashi said: “Nintendo constantly works on hardware, so we have been doing research and development, so you may see the new system sometime in the future.”
Just what exactly is Mr. Takahashi teasing here? It could be hardware to succeed the 3DS, now in its 8th year on store shelves, or possibly to an upgraded Switch console. It could even be new hardware that will one day replace the Switch altogether. It’s hard to say exactly at this point what it is. However, it should come as no surprise to people either. Major gaming companies like Nintendo often start research and development on a follow-up platform within the first year the newest hardware is released. The Nintendo Switch started development in Late 2013, only a year after the Wii U was released.
