Bethesda Used Destiny As A Reference For Fallout 4’s Shooting Mechanics

We’re hot on the tail of the highly anticipated Fallout 4 release, and a whole slew of new information, footage, and stills have been either leaked or released, and that continues on with the latest issue of the popular gaming magazine, Game Informer (via Gamespot). In their story on the upcoming post-apocalyptic title, GI revealed that Bethesda Studios has looked to Bungie’s popular online FPS Destiny to help improve its shooting mechanics from the less-than-stellar incarnations from the earlier Fallout titles.

Love it or hate it, it’s hard to deny that, for all its flaws, Destiny has exceptionally well-crafted gunplay. The guns feel right, the aiming rarely lets you down, and the weapon variation is just enough to keep guns fresh and interesting (despite a rather bloated upgrade system). With such a big focus on the weapons and expansive weapon crafting in the upcoming release, these are certainly aspects that Bethesda needs to ensure the game doesn’t lack in quality. As well as this, Destiny also runs at 30fps, just like Fallout 4, making it an ideal reference for the game studio.

Fortunately for Bethesda, they have just the right team member to help them achieve their goals on board, after they took on board ex-Bungie employee Josh Hamrick, who worked on the aforementioned Sci-Fi shooter. In his role as Senior Systems Designer, Hamrick has been able to really focus on fine tuning the game’s gun mechanics.

Fallout 4 Director Todd Howard spoke on the game’s gun system, saying:

“The main difference in the way we develop [and other studios] is that we will develop with as many knobs as possible. We’re always thinking of scale. We’re not a team that is just going to make eight guns and spend forever on one gun. We knew we were going to have thousands, so we needed to develop a gun system that had all of the dials.”

For the full story, make sure to get your hands on the latest issue of Game Informer and delve right into the “Making of Fallout 4” feature.

Fallout 4 releases internationally on November 10 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
