PlayStation 3 Production Ends in Japan

Well, it’s over. It is finally over. Sony is set to completely retire the incredible PS3. The tech giants have slowly been signalling the end of the PlayStation 3 for quite some time now as the production of other models has stopped over the course of the last year.

Now, Sony has announced that the 500GB PlayStation 3, the last remaining model left in production, will cease in Japan. With production halted in the far East, it will only be a matter of time before all the other regions will follow suit, and the PlayStation 3 will be retired after 11 years of service.

Although it suffered a slow start to life, the PlayStation 3 still went on to become a huge success, selling over 83 million copies worldwide. This huge success can be attributed to a good number of exclusive titles, such as God of War, Killzone and Metal Gear Solid, and also for its ability to play the growingly popular Blu-ray disc format, something Microsoft did not fit into the Xbox 360. Gamers could play all the big multi-console titles, such as Call of Duty and FIFA, enjoy amazing exclusive titles and play Blu-ray movies all on one console.

Sony did promise when the PlayStation 3 released back in 2006 that the console will have a 10-year lifespan and will be fully supported during that time. Sony kept their word, but there will always come a time when companies will have to put the last gen out of production to entice the reluctant consumers who have stuck with the last gen to upgrade to the new gen.
