PlayStation 3 is discontinued in New Zealand

The PlayStation 3 has been discontinued in New Zealand, Sony has confirmed. Is the end of an era approaching?

PS3 consoles are still available in the country, however once they have been sold no more stock will be shipped to retailers meaning the only PS3 consoles which will be available will be pre-owned. At present, New Zealand is the only country in which the PS3 has been discontinued, however Sony may have plans to discontinue the console in other regions in the future.

Sony’s plans were first revealed yesterday via a Facebook post by New Zealand’s biggest games retailer, Mighty Ape Games. The post was deleted but it read as follows:

“Sony have informed us that the PS3 is officially discontinued for NZ- the end of an era! What’s your favourite PS3 memory?”

An official statement did come from Sony though to New Zealand website ThoseGamers. “SCENZ will not be shipping anymore PlayStation 3 consoles to its retailers however the platform is still available in retail outlets throughout NZ and being supported with peripherals, great new releases and back catalogue software.”

It’s only a matter of time before Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will follow suit, as will the discontinuation of the PS3 around the world. The question left to be answered is when.
