Pokémon Sun and Moon have managed to sell just under 2 million units during the games’ opening weekend in Japan, making it one of the most successful 3DS launches ever.
According to Famitsu, during the first three days of being available in Japan, Pokémon Sun and Moon shifted an incredible 1,905,107 copies, falling just short of surpassing the 2.096 million units sold by Pokemon X and Y during their first few days of being on sale in 2013. The biggest Nintendo 3DS launches to date in Japan are Pokémon X and Y.
We don’t yet have any sales figures for Pokémon Sun and Moon in the USA though, which also released last Friday. Gamers in Europe will be able to grab Pokémon Sun and Moon starting midnight tonight, so we expect to hear some official worldwide sales announcements from Nintendo over the next few days and weeks.
Nintendo are expecting to sell millions of copies of the game, however, as they’ve already announced that they have shipped 10 million copies of Pokémon Sun and Moon to retailers around the world. Interest in Sun and Moon has been huge with the game breaking Nintendo’s pre-order record, as well as the demo being downloaded a record breaking 3.5 million times.
It’s likely that overall sales of Pokémon Sun and Moon in Japan are a lot higher than that, however, as the digital sales are not included. The 1.9m units sold are just for physical copies of the game.
