PS4 Pro Will Enable Games to Surpass Image Quality of Movies, Says Gran Turismo Creator

According to Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, Sony’s PS4 Pro console will enable video games to finally surpass the image quality of movies.

Speaking on the PlayStation Blog, Yamauchi stated that the release of the PS4 Pro will mark the first time in video game history that image quality in games will be able to exceed the quality we find in the film and movie industry.

Thanks to the PS4 Pro, Gran Turismo Sport will be able to be experienced at 60 FPS with 4K Visuals. The game will also have HDR and wide colour which will enable real life colours to be recreated in game. That means that cars such as Ferraris will be able to be accurately represented in game now which hadn’t previously been possible, at least with regards to the colour of the cars. It’s previously been impossible to recreate the distinctive red colour used by Ferrari.

“PS4 Pro marks a historical moment, it’s the first time video games are going to exceed and better the quality of images in movies, broadcasting and packaged media out there,” said Yamuachi. “I think the world of 4K and 60FPS is a pinnacle for the games industry, and to be able to provide that sort of quality on a home console is something special.”

“All the cars look fantastic in 4K in terms of the detail improvements, but if you look at it from the aspect of HDR and wide colour, about 11% of the cars in the real world today don’t fit into the standard colour space that was possible in games up until now.

“Cars like Ferrari… it wasn’t actually possible to accurately represent that particular distinctive red in games unless you used the wide colour space that’s now available in GT Sport. So the brightly coloured cars out there are now going to look perfect in the game.”

Gran Turismo Sport releases on PS4 next year.
