In an effort to beef up account security for its gamers, Sony has finally introduced a 2-step verification system for all PSN accounts, making it that bit harder for accounts to now be hacked.
The 2-step verification system now means that you can add a second layer of security to your account by linking your PSN account to your phone. By doing this, a verification code will be sent to your phone by text and will need to be entered when you log-in to your PSN account for the first time after enabling 2-step verification, as well as whenever you turn on your console and have auto-sign in switched off. If you use auto-sign in, you won’t need to enter a verification code everytime you turn on your PS4 unless you get logged out.
The verification code won’t be needed for performing actions such as accessing account management, which will require just your account password, or when purchasing items from the PlayStation Store. If you have Password at Checkout enabled, you will only need to enter your password even if 2-step verification is enabled.
Users will still need to enter their account password when logging in, however, the verification code is there to help keep your account secure in the event that your password does get compromised. 2-step verification can be switched off and is not compulsory.
“Passwords can be compromised if you use the same password for multiple accounts, click on malicious links, open phishing emails and other methods,” said Sony on its website. “If your password is compromised and becomes known to someone other than yourself, your account will still require a verification code to gain access when you activate 2-Step Verification.”
