Is PlayStation Plus Extra Too Good?

Too many games, so little time!

You have to hand it to Xbox. If it weren’t for Microsoft constructing their terrific GamePass subscription, SONY would never have felt the need to respond. Well, in June 2022, SONY responded with its PS Plus Extra and Premium services.

We are now approaching the first anniversary of its launch in June 2022, and as someone who bought into the PlayStation ecosystem from day one, I have to say, as the months have gone by, the more and more I’ve been impressed. I am never short of something new to play.

I was never interested in the PS Plus Premium service as I still have my PS2 and PS3 hooked up and can play old games on those systems anytime. So, the plan that was right for me was the PS Plus Extra.

Although it was disappointing to hear that the service wouldn’t be having many, if any, day-one releases, (Stray and Humanity have been the exception) the question on everyone’s lips at the time was; how long would it take for SONY to eventually add the big-hitting exclusives?

Fast forward to today, nearly a year down the line, and currently we now have a staggering number of games in the entire collection, including most of the big SONY first-party console exclusives. Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and Death Stranding are to name but a few, let alone the third-party games from many other developers, such as Yakuza, Assassin’s Creed, and now Tomb Raider

Now, I can only speak for myself as someone who does have more free time to enjoy these games than most, but even so, with the hundreds of quality games in the plan, there is no way I could have the time to get through this back catalog.  There is also the issue of when you do eventually get the time to play a game, there is then the risk it gets taken out of the service before you could finish it. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, and soon to go, Spider-Man (2018), are examples of this.

So, my question to you, dear reader, is this: Are there TOO many games in the service, and is it TOO good? Do you feel like you can take advantage of what’s on offer, or is it a constant struggle to complete games before they leave? Would you like to see fewer games stay longer, or is it fine as it is?

We would love to hear your views on this, so we look forward to hearing from you in the comments below.
