You can tame the dinosaurs and ride them around, with 70+ different dinosaurs scheduled to be in the game at launch.

2) This War of Mine

Ever wondered what it is like to be a civilian in a city besieged by war and inhumanity? Well that is what This War Of Mine tries to portray by putting you in the role of a group of civilians caught up in a devastating conflict. With a lack of food and medicine and the constant threat of enemy snipers and fellow survivors in the city, you must find a way to survive until the end of war by any means necessary.

During the day, with the threat of snipers lurking, you must focus on maintaining your shelter and completing jobs around your base such as crafting and trading and looking after your survivors. Night is your saving grace as you look to scavenge the city for supplies that will ultimately ensure your survival.

In This War Of Mine, you aren’t a hero. You are just a normal civilian trying to survive during one of the most horrendous experiences a person could go through.

3) Rust

It seems like forever since Rust was released way back in Alpha, however since then it has undergone a huge makeover and redesign. The result? A game with a shitload of features and possibilities which it would never have been able to realise!

Your only aim in Rust is to survive as you fight against hunger, thirst and nature itself. Defend yourself against the various wild animals which roam the procedurally generated maps as well as other human players who will kill you and eat you. Or not. Depends if they are a cannibal and desperate for your meat! You must build your base, gather supplies and craft weapons and the materials you need to survive. The amount of new content being added to Rust is crazy and you will never be short of things to aim for, whether it be drilling for oil or something else which is crazy. Expect turrets and vehicles and Rust seems to be getting better and better.

4) Reign of Kings

Want to engage in that dark side you have and capture and torture other players? Fancy hanging them from the gallows, throwing them in the stocks or one better, chopping off their head? Then Reign of Kings may be right up your street.

Your typical survival game, pitting you against the elements and other players, you must gather and hunt for food as well as mine resources and build your own shelter, which can turn into a castle if you survive long enough! 5) The Forest

6) Stranded Deep

Ever found yourself wondering it would be like to be stranded on a desert island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? Well now you don’t have to let your imagination run wild as you get to experience it for “real”. Thankfully, you can return to the normality of life whenever you feel like it…

In Stranded Deep, you play the role of a lone plane crash survivor, you find yourself in a life raft close to an island you must paddle to. From there, survival is in your own hands. Smash open coconuts, chop down trees, build a shelter and fish for your evening meal. With only a few items on you, which will quickly deteriorate with use, you must find a way to sustain yourself for as long as possible. Scavenge shipwrecks for supplies which may save your life or build a raft and set off for islands on the horizon in an attempt to continue your survival. Watch out for sharks, heatstroke, infections and the ever present threat of death.

7) Subnautica

Having crash landed on an alien world filled by oceans, you must venture beneath the waves to explore and survive in this alien and hostile world. The most important thing is managing your oxygen supply as without it, you will perish. Find water, food and resources from the ocean to craft the equipment you will need to stay alive such as knives, diving gear and even your very own water craft.

The deeper you go, the rarer and more valueable the resources you find will be. Build your own underwater habitat and shape the world around you. The Subnautica sea-floor has a dynamic voxel-terrain allowing you to dig caves so that you can hide, store loot, or short-circuit cave systems. Impacts from vehicles, or even exploding creatures, will change the way the world looks. If you check out the Steam reviews for Subnautica, you’ll see that a lot of people think it’s one of the best survival games currently in development.

8) Savage Lands

Savage Lands is well, Savage. Your only goal in Savage Lands is to stay alive and survive against the hordes of brutal and vicious creatures which lurk on the island. It’s a brutal and challenging survival game. Resources are scarce and the cold is bitter. Stay outside in the cold for too long and your body will freeze to death. Fire is your friend in Savage Lands. It will help ensure your survival.

Savage Lands takes place in a fantasy world so if skeletons, dragons and weird looking tree monsters are your thing, then Savage Lands will fill your burning desire for a fantasy survival game. Just remember that Savage Lands is…..Savage.

9) Miscreated

Miscreated is an open-world survival game which takes place in 2089 after the final war, a war which no one knows what started it. As a result of the nuclear fallout, mutants roam the lands as well as fellow survivors as you try to survive by gathering what little supplies can be found in the world. You can team up or go it alone, it’s your choice. Good or Bad, you decide.

If there is one survival game which captures the atmospheric mood it tries to create, it is Miscreated. The game looks beautiful and the world looks and feels like it is taking place after the apocalypse. Not only that, but Miscreated allows you to create your own bases by scavenging and harvesting materials from the world itself. Base-building is unique and provides an end-goal to aim for. Not only that, but Miscreated is one of the few survival games which manages to have fully functioning vehicles to speed around the world in. It has the potential to become of the best survival games, but only time will tell whether or not it can live it up to its potential or if it will fade away into oblivion.
