Best Free PC Games 2016

Are you looking for the best free-to-play games to play in 2016? If so, we have you covered with a variety of different free PC games which are sure to provide you with lots of content, ranging from World War Two shooters and zombie survival games to MMOs and MOBAs. Therefore, to help you in your quest to find the perfect free game, we’ve come up with 10 of the best free games on PC which are sure to provide you with hours of fun and gameplay, all for the price of….nothing.

1) Heroes & Generals

Heroes & Generals

Heroes & Generals tops the list of the best free-to-play games and is my personal favourite due to the huge amount of content and great gameplay the game has to offer. It’s refreshing to take a step back to World War 2, especially given that all of today’s shooters are set in the modern era. Heroes & Generals is a multiplayer game and features the Germans, Russians and Americans. You must choose what side to fight for in the war before heading into the game to help your team achieve victory by winning matches. You can also play as a General where you help assign task forces to certain areas of the European map to help sway the outcome of the battle.

“Players can choose to play as ‘Heroes’, fighting in the trenches, flying planes, commanding tanks and other vehicles on the battlefield, or take control of the war as ‘Generals’, determining the strategic direction and supporting fellow players by managing battlefield assets, army units and reinforcements.”

2) Dota 2

Dota 2

Dota 2 is one of the world’s most popular MOBAs, with only League of Legends being more popular. Created by Valve, Dota 2 is a must play for anyone who loves competitive gaming. You get to pick from a pool of over a hundred heroes to fight as, each with their own abilities before heading into a 5v5 match. Both teams fight for victory by destroying all of the other teams towers while at the same time protecting their own. The game can be very complex and daunting at first, however don’t let that put you off giving it a try! There’s no doubt that Dota 2 is one of the best free-to-play games available, and you have nothing to lose by trying it as its free!

3) League of Legends

League of Legends

League of Legends plays very similar to Dota 2 and so it usually comes down to personal preference which game you prefer, with League of Legends having a slightly more cartoony art style. While Dota 2 peaks at just under 1 million players at any given time, League of Legends peaks at over 7.5 million players at peak times, making it the most played PC game in North America and Europe. In League of Legends, you pick your hero and take part in matches with the aim of destroying the enemy teams “Nexus”, which is at the heart of their base.

4) Warframe

Warframe

If you are looking for a fun and enjoyable co-op game , then look no further than Warframe, which is a cooperative free-to-play third person online action game which is set in an evolving sci-fi world. The game is also available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC which means that no matter what your preferred platform of choice is, you’ll be able to play Warframe. In the game, players play as members of the Tenno which are a race of ancient warriors fighting against the Grineer. Players must complete missions which are scattered throughout the universe, taking them to lots of different planets, each with their own objective. The game can be played without spending a penny, although if you want to buy better gear and weapons without waiting, then you can through microtransactions.

5) Unturned

Unturned

Unturned is a zombie survival sandbox game and comes with all the features you’d expect from such a game, including watching your thirst and hunger, zombies, base-building and lots of other survival elements such as hunting, fishing and farming. For a free-to-play game, Unturned is definitely a lot of fun, but is best enjoyed when playing with friends due to the rather hostile crowds these kind of games attract. Watch your back and trust sparingly, otherwise you may find yourself….dead. If you aren’t a fan of PvP, there are PvE servers you can join, allowing you to team-up with other players and battle the zombies together.

6) Dirty Bomb

Dirty Bomb

Dirty Bomb is a fast-paced multiplayer shooter set in an abandoned London following the collapse of the city from a mysterious disaster. As a result, Private Military Companies fight for control of the city and its riches. Dirty Bomb is a very fun game it has to be said, so if you are looking for a solid FPS, this game is it. You can choice from a nice variety of different mercs to play, with you being able to take three with you into a match to switch between at your will. The good thing about Dirty Bomb is that you don’t feel disadvantaged if you don’t pay unlike in other free-to-play FPS. You can enjoy and stay competitive in Dirty Bomb by just simply playing, which is what all free-to-play games should be like.

7) Dungeon Defenders 2

Dungeon Defenders 2

Dungeon Defenders II is a cooperative tower defense game combined with roleplaying elements such as loot and leveling and is available on both PC and PlayStation 4. Overall, Dungeon Defenders II is a very fun and action packed game with a lot of content on offer and even includes cooperative multiplayer which adds a whole new dimension to the game. The game is just as fun though when playing by yourself as you battle against The Old One’s armies that have invaded Etheria.

If you enjoy the art style of Dungeon Defeners, you might also like The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot.

8) Rift

Rift

If you are looking for a free-to-play MMO, you should definitely check out Rift. The game started its life as a subscription MMO, however it quickly turned free-to-play and has gone from strength to strength since. Rift has all your typical MMO features such as Raids, Dungeons, Questing etc, however what seperates Rift from other similar MMOs is the class system and the massive dynamic battles which can occur all over Telara. You can also build your own house for you, your friends and your guild.

9) Romero’s Aftermath

Aftermath

If Romero’s Aftermath looks familiar, it’s probably because you’ll have played Infestation: Survivor Stories, aka The War Z. However, don’t let that put you off Aftermath. While it’s far from being a DayZ or H1Z1 competitor, Aftermath is free and keeps the same fun, tense and great PvP experience from Infestation. The game also has base-building allowing players to create their own bases during the zombie apocalypse. There are more weapons and items available, as well as crafting to keep players busy. Most items can be found in the game so you don’t need to spend any money unless you want. Not only that, but there is a mixture of both PvP and PvE servers to cater for every type of player.

10) World of Warships

World of Warships

You either enjoy games like World of Warships or you don’t. If you’ve played World of Tanks or World of Warplanes, World of Warships is very similar except you take control of huge warships battling throughout the world’s oceans from any one of 6 different factions featured in the game. You can take control and upgrade warships from Germany, Russia, United States of America, United Kingdom, Empire of Japan and Poland. There are four classes of ships available for each faction, such as Destroyers, Cruisers, Aircraft Carriers and Battleships.
