Xbox One S vs Xbox One Project Scorpio: Comparison to Help You Decide Which One to Get

If you’re like me and don’t own an Xbox One yet and waited for Microsoft’s E3 conference, now you have another decision to make: Xbox One S or Xbox One Project Scorpio. Hopefully, this feature should cover and answer all of your questions and help you make the best decision for your bank.

June 13th was the official announcement of the Xbox One S, even though news about it leaked days earlier. Xbox One S is a new video game console by Microsoft and will be available for sale in early August. The Xbox One S will have up 2 TB of internal storage and a power supply, and it will start as low as $300 or $450 including tax for that 2 TB beast. It is 40% smaller than the original Xbox One and can be placed horizontally or vertically with an optional stand.

According to Microsoft and their store, these are the features for the Xbox One S:

High Dynamic Range that lets gamers experience richer, more luminous colors in games like Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3. With a higher contrast ratio between lights and darks, High Dynamic Range technology brings out the true visual depth of your games.

4k Ultra HDWith four times the resolution of standard HD 4k Ultra HD delivers the clearest, most realistic video possible. Stream 4k content on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video and watch Ultra HD Blu-rayTMmovies in stunning visual fidelity with High Dynamic Range.

IR Blaster

Configure your Xbox One S to turn on other devices, like your TV, audio/video receiver, and cable/satellite receiver. Whether you’re playing a game or watching a movie, the integrated IR blaster will get you to the action faster, allowing you to leave your remotes behind.

Xbox Wireless Controller

Experience the enhanced comfort of the new Xbox Wireless Controller, featuring a sleeker, more streamlined design. Get up to twice the wireless range. Stay on target with textured grip. And with Bluetooth® technology, play your favorite games on Windows 10 PCs, tablets, and phones.

Now, all of that sounds nice, but gamers won’t be able to play games in 4k with the Xbox One S because that feature was saved for the Xbox One Project Scorpio- in addition to other new features. Xbox Project Scorpio will support VR and 4K gaming. Todd Howard, the creative director of Bethesda, revealed that the VR version of Fallout 4 will come to Project Scorpio. But that’s not all, this console is expected to launch in 2017 holiday season and will be a major upgrade in comparison to existing consoles.

Microsoft announced the Scorpio console during its E3 2016 briefing on Monday morning. Set to release in 2017, the new system will feature 8 cores, 320Gb memory bandwidth, and six teraflops of performance that will allow for true fully uncompressed 4K gaming.

Virtual reality is gaining a lot of popularity in the gaming community, and according to Xbox chief Phil Spencer, Project Scorpio will support VR games, however, he suggested that Microsoft may not make the VR headset. Furthermore, he did not reveal the head mounts that will be compatible with Project Scorpio. He also made the comment to GamesSpot sister site Giant Bomb’s E3 show last night.

“Scorpio is more powerful than the original Xbox One, four and a half times. And the six teraflops will impact the games and how they play,” he explained.

The important thing for Scorpio is that it’s a dramatic step up for us in terms of hardware capability,” he told The Vergein in an interview last week. “Because as we saw 4K gaming and really high-end VR taking off in the PC space, we wanted to be able to bring that to console. Project Scorpio is actually an Xbox One that can natively run games in 4K and is built with the hardware capabilities to support the high-end VR that you see happening in the PC space today… when it ships it will be the most powerful console ever built.”

Also, Spencer stated games like Halo 5: Guardians are going to run at maximum resolution the whole time.

Xbox One Project Scorpio is said to be released Fall 2017. So, if you are/were like me and couldn’t decide or already ordered an Xbox One S, I hope this helps you decide. As for me, I’m going to cancel my Xbox One S and wait for Project Scorpio.

Good write up. I would say if you don’t have a 4k TV or Monitor and want to try Xbox One. Go out and grab one of the OG Xbox Ones and a USB 3.0 7500 or 10k spin external drive. The old consoles are getting cheap used and even at retail. More money to buy games and build a collection to take with you to the real upgrade Project Scorpio.
