No Man’s Sky on PS4 Doesn’t Require PlayStation Plus

Hello Games’ highly anticipated space exploration game No Man’s Sky has today confirmed that you will not need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play it.

Sony confirmed this with Game Informer. A spokesman had this to say:

“PS Plus won’t be a requirement to play online, however, you will need to be connected to the internet for your discoveries to register with the universal atlas.”

This Universal Atlas mentioned above is a compendium that all players contribute to. Discovering planets, lifeforms, minerals, etc. all adds to this compendium.

The fact that No Man’s Sky has over 18 quintillion planets in the galaxy means there is a high chance that you will find discoveries yourself, and that the chances are even more rare that you will run across another real life player, nevermind your friends. No Man’s Sky is still an open world sandbox, meaning the possibility is there.

Due to this fact, this may explain the lack of PlayStation Plus being required. Hello Games have always downplayed multiplayer because it’s not really a multiplayer game. With both the Steam store and PlayStation 4 store describing the game as single-player. Putting this into account, making No Man’s Sky have a subscription wouldn’t really work well.

Recently, Hello Games have been releasing a series of trailers for No Man’s Sky called the ‘4 Pillars’. The 4 Pillars explain the different aspects to the game. Explore, Fight, Trade, and Survive are all shown off in these trailers.

No Man’s Sky will be released on August 9th on PlayStation 4 and PC.
