New Secret Lair x Brain Dead Drop, and Could Bloomburrow Be Magic’s Biggest Set?

Magic: The Gathering has announced their next Secret Lair collaboration with L.A.-based art collective Brain Dead, just a few weeks shy of the next set release called Bloomburrow. This upcoming drop will bring some amazing cards back to the forefront with some even more amazing new art and borders.

These lands look insane and are probably going to be big crowd-pleasers in some high-value decks.

Announced last week, Secret Lair x Brain Dead is the latest Secret Lair drop from the creators of Magic: The Gathering. Like previous drops, this new series of cards is a limited run of some of the best cards from the game with all-new art that breathes fresh life into them.

The first drop, Secret Lair x Brain Dead: Creatures, will feature some of the art collective‘s favourite creatures from the game with art in their telltale style. Some of the choices make a lot of sense, such as Wurmcoil Engine, which has a big place in certain Modern decklists. Others, like Chaotic Goo, strike me more as a very personal choice by the team in the best way possible.

Either way, the art on display is top-notch. Some of it feels reminiscent of The Garbage Pail Kids and their disgusting trading cards, while all of it is as unique as you could hope for. While I may have moaned about Ghaotic Goo, that art is phenomenal, and you may see some of these cards on the walls of your classier Magic-playing friends.

You can also expect a couple of other drop options, with Secret Lair x Brain Dead: Lands, and Secret Lair X Brain Dead: Staples, coming with some heavily used land reprints and in-game staples, respectively.

Magic: The Gathering – Bloomburrow Set to Storm the World?

These little animal-folks have attracted a lot of attention since the set’s announcement earlier this year.

On a semi-related note, the latest Magic: The Gathering drop is set for release in just a short week or two. Bloomburrow has been turning heads with both veteran Magic players as well as newcomers but for very different reasons.

If you’ve not already seen it, Bloomburrow is a non-human set that features Redwall-style (arguably) anthropomorphic animals living in a cute little society. The new art is a huge hit with folks, and EDH (commander) players are excited by many of the new legendaries we have heading our way.

Still, the set is causing some level of concern among long-time Magic players. Bloomburrow is pretty tightly squeezed between Modern Masters 3, which dropped in June, Assassin’s Creed, which happened in July, and Duskmourn, coming out in September. With so little breathing room, many are asking if Bloomburrow is going to be the full set we all deserve or a weird, between-licensed-IP stopgap. Only time will tell.

Bloomburrow is set to release on August 2nd, with Secret Lair x Brain Dead on sale from July 29th.
