Best Pirate Games 2019

When it comes to video games, pirates probably don’t get as much love as they should. After all, there are so many beautiful settings and stories that can be crafted, as well as the theme naturally giving players the freedom to do as they please. Isn’t that what pirate life is all about? They fit perfectly into open-world games which are hugely popular right now. So as a result, we’ve decided to show the pirate genre some much-needed love and have come up with a list of the best pirate games that you can play in 2019!

What are the Best Pirate Games to play in 2019?

10) Risen 2: Dark Waters

Risen 2

Risen 2 is a third-person action adventure game set several years after the concluding events of the first Risen game. However, unlike the first game, Risen 2: Dark Waters is set around the pirate theme and manages to mix the fantasy monsters of the first game with the swashbuckling adventures of pirates, making the title one action-packed game. Risen 2 is also entirely open-world allowing players to explore the islands and seas as they wish, and if there is one area that Risen 2 excels in, it is its locations which are recreated in brilliant detail and will make pirate lovers feel at home. It’s far from being perfect though mainly due to frustrating combat, however, Risen 2: Dark Waters is a great pirate game nonetheless.

Platform: PS3, Xbox 360 & PC

Price: £7.99

9) Atlas

Atlas is a multiplayer Pirate MMO developed by the creators of Ark: Survival Evolved. In Atlas, you create your own pirate before you’re thrown out into the vast open-world where you are free to do as you please. Players can explore the numerous islands dotted throughout the world, raid other player ships and settlements. You can even settle down yourself by building your very own settlement. You can play Atlas solo or with friends, although given that it’s an MMO there’s a good chance you’re going to encounter other player pirates sooner rather than later. Atlas also features crafting and shipbuilding that allows you to create the ships of your dreams. You can even hire a crew and captain your ship on your quest to rule the high seas!

Platform: PC

Price: £23.79

8) Pirates of the Polygon Sea

In Pirates of the Polygon Sea, players can build their very own bustling port town by constructing docks, marketplaces, shipwrights, fishmongers, and guard towers to name a few things. You can also trade with ports and islands, search for lost treasure, and even plunder and attack other ships in typical pirate fashion. The aim is to essentially become as rich and powerful as possible, although that won’t be an easy task, especially as it’s not only other pirates and enemies you’ll be facing. Beneath the waves lurks the legendary Kraken, as well as other creatures such as mermaids and giant whales.

If you’re looking for a cheap pirate game that is fun and offers lots of content, Pirates of the Polygon Sea is definitely worth checking out!

Platform: PC

Price: £6.19

 7) Tempest

Tempest is an open-world pirate RPG which has recently come out of Early Access on Steam and has now been fully released. In Tempest, players are given a huge open-world to explore which has been recreated in great detail and looks great, especially the sea battles. There are three regions to explore with dozens of islands scattered throughout them and hundreds of quests to stumble across and complete.

However, players are free to do what they want, whether that be buying goods cheap and selling them for profit, or you can earn your living by plundering and sinking other ships, as well as attacking and destroying forts which are scattered throughout the world. Being a pirate, you get your own ship which you can upgrade and decorate, and you can also recruit your own crew who level up the longer they serve under your command. If you enjoy a good pirate tale, there are also mysterious sea monsters that lurk the oceans and may pose a threat to you and the other pirates in the area, however, you can also use them to your advantage as well.

If that wasn’t enough, Tempest can also be enjoyed online with friends, allowing you to stalk the seas together. This is optional though, and the game can be fully enjoyed in singleplayer. We definitely suggest giving Tempest ago, it’s certainly one of the best pirate games to have released recently.

Platform: PC

Price: £14.99

6) Sid Meier’s Pirates

How could you have a list of the best pirate games and not include Sid Meier’s Pirates? Sid Meier’s Pirates may look like a dated game by today’s standards, however, you’d be hard pressed to find a game that offers a better all-round experience when it comes to naval combat, trading, and exploring in a pirate setting than this one.

The game takes place in the Caribbean and starts off by having players pledge allegiance to one of the great naval powers of the time, including Great Britain, France, Spain, and of course, Holland. From here, players are free to pretty much do as they wish, whether that be trading, defeating pirates, raiding other nations, or completing quests. Alternatively, the pirate life may be more for you, in which case you can attack and plunder anything that moves! Not only that, but there are various towns and cities scattered throughout the Caribbean that you can visit to buy and sell goods, recruit crew members, and upgrade and repair your ship. If you’re hostile with the nation who controls the town, you can also attempt to attack it.

Sid Meier’s Pirates has everything you could want from a pirate game and considering it’s available at a ridiculously cheap price, it really is a no brainer. It’s one of the best PC pirate games and if you still own a PSP, Xbox 360 or a smartphone, you can also play it on those platforms.

Platform: Xbox 360, Wii, PSP & PC, as well as iOS and Android

Price: £5.99

5) Blackwake

Blackwake is a pirate multiplayer FPS that is available to purchase on Steam. The game puts players in the shoes of crew members aboard pirate ships as you engage in naval combat with other ships also manned by players. It’s a multiplayer team-based shooter at its core.

Not only must each team work together to sail their ship while taking into account various weather conditions but they must also man the guns and engage in combat, as well as repair their ship as it takes damage. This can be done by plugging holes and pumping water out of the ship before it sinks, which helps create a sense of panic as you come under intense fire. However, players aren’t assigned to any particular role, meaning you are free to do as you wish, although to be successful you must work as a team. Players can also customise their character and their ships as you level up your rank.

Platform: PC

Price: £14.99

4) Blood and Gold: Caribbean

Blood and Gold: Caribbean is built on the same engine as the Mount & Blade games so anyone familiar with them will feel right at home here. At its core, Blood and Gold: Caribbean is an open-world sandbox game that is set in the 17th century Caribbean. Players create their own character and must build themselves up from being a nobody to one of the most feared pirates in the region. There’s a load of different quests on offer from the various nations that were present during this time period for players to align themselves to. You must raise your own army and sailors, conquer new islands and territory, plunder ships and treasures, raid other settlements and level up your character. If you can get past the slightly dated graphics, then this is one of the best pirate RPG games on offer.

Platform: PC

Price: £14.99

3) Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is regarded as one of the best games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, and it’s not hard to see why. Black Flag took the series into new waters by heading to the Caribbean, and as a result, introducing a host of new features including naval combat. Black Flag has a strong and engaging story which will keep you playing for hours upon hours and if that’s not enough, the side quests and exploration on offer will certainly keep you busy. Players can also upgrade their ship, the Jackdaw, and attack other navy ships as well as fortifications and settlements scattered on islands throughout the Caribbean. Black Flag is an Assassin’s Creed game as its core, but the pirate setting, great gameplay mechanics, and stunning graphics make the game a must have for any pirate fan.

Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U & PC

Price: £15.99

2) Skull & Bones

Developed by Ubisoft, Skull & Bones is the latest pirate game that allows players to conquer the high seas. Set during the golden age of piracy, players must master the art of sailing and naval combat while building up powerful alliances with other factions to remain as the most feared pirate around. Skull & Bones gives players the option of playing as a lone wolf of teaming up with friends or other random pirates. From here, players compete against each other for territory and treasure which is used to upgrade their ships with the latest equipment and weapons.

Skull & Bones won’t take place on land however but what it will bring to the table is the latest graphics and physics set in a gorgeous open-world where players have the freedom to go and do as they please in a living, breathing world containing dynamic weather, conflicts, and cataclysms.

Platform: Xbox One, PlayStation 4 & PC

Price: £N/A

1) Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves is an open-world pirate MMO released on Xbox One and PC in March 2018 and is the first game of its kind to release on console. In Sea of Thieves, players create their very own pirate and can form crews with other players before embarking upon epic voyages which sees players searching for treasure and exploring new lands. The game is designed around co-op play and teaming up with other pirates but offers the flexibility and freedom for players to choose to be the pirates they want to be and set their own roles and goals.

Around the world, players will find various quests they can complete which will see them searching for buried treasure or legendary artifacts to name a few. Not only that, but your crew can engage with other pirates on the open seas which will lead to some very intense encounters.

In our opinion, Sea of Thieves is arguably the best pirate game available to play right now.
