Could We See Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered in 2017?

This year’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare seems to have divided opinions with some gamers loving the futuristic setting, while others are wanting to see the series return to its roots. Our very own Ian Cooper and Dom Richards both loved Infinite Warfare in their review, but if there is one thing there is no denying, it’s that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered has gone down as an absolute treat with gamers.

With Modern Warfare Remastered being such a huge success and undoubtedly helping Infinite Warfare grab a few extra sales, there’s certainly a chance that Activision are seriously considering releasing a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster in 2017. For starters, there’s definitely a huge demand for it, and where there is demand, there’s an opportunity to make money.

Call of Duty has come in for criticism for its choice of futuristic settings and styles of gameplay with every game since Call of Duty: Black Ops II being set in the future. If Activision have no intentions of rolling back the years, Modern Warfare remasters make even more sense as they allow Activision to keep their player base happy.

In fact, two years ago a petition that was sent to Activision to release a Modern Warfare 2 remaster on current-gen consoles gained over 200,000 signatures. That may have helped make up Activision’s mind to release this year’s Modern Warfare Remastered, although they may already have had plans to do so anyway. It would only seem natural though that its sequel will also get a remastered release.

2017’s Call of Duty game is being developed by Sledgehammer Games who developed Modern Warfare 3. While they won’t be developing a Modern Warfare 3 remaster (it wouldn’t make sense due to the Modern Warfare timeline and the fact that they are developing the next Call of Duty game), another studio would likely be working on a Modern Warfare 2 remaster as was the case this year with Raven Software. The developer has worked on previous Call of Duty games by developing the multiplayer component, so they are more than qualified and trusted enough by Activision to work on another remaster.

Not only that, but since there are three games in the Modern Warfare franchise, it would make sense that all three games would see re-releases, especially given how popular Modern Warfare Remastered has been. A Modern Warfare trilogy perhaps?

If we do see a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remaster next year, it will be interesting to see whether or not this year’s remaster gets a separate release. Currently, it can only be played by purchasing the legacy or digital deluxe versions of Infinite Warfare. It’s been anticipated to get a solo release at some point next year, but Activision have always remained adamant that it will only be available as a package with Infinite Warfare. If Activision have a plan to remaster all of the Modern Warfare games, it may mean that they will hold off releasing Modern Warfare Remastered on its own and instead wait to release a remaster trilogy.

However, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is currently the third most voted game to be made available to play on Xbox One via Backwards Compatability with over 159,000 votes, so there’s definitely an appetite for it. In fact, Call of Duty games take 4 of the top 5 spots with Modern Warfare 3 and Modern Warfare taking 4th and 5th position, respectively. Of course, Modern Warfare has already been remastered, as has Skyrim which is in second place. Black Ops II is the most voted game with just under 200,000 votes.
